The following would be cool in my view to have on the Internet and/or the world at large. They go from the very small to projects that would require hundreds of person-years. Feel free to run with them!
- Data visualization projects:
- A one-dot-per-million-people population visualization (like this or this) where one can also see the area that each dot covers, and for those area that are large enough, be able to see the underlying population distribution in more detail. It might also be interesting to have one-dot-per-ten-million-people variants, which do not seem to exist at the moment (2024).
- A global visual atlas of political control across countries, regions, municipalities, etc. It would include both the control of executive offices (whether directly elected or parlamentary elected), and the control of parlamentary seats. Large amounts of the relevant content are already stored in Wikipedia in relatively standard ways. This would not necessarily imply displaying the districts that different members of an assembly were elected in, just the seat count across parties, as well as the resulting executive control. Displaying majority parlamentary coalitions would be appropriate as well, when possible to identify clearly.
- A starter version of the previous project that e.g. focuses on capital cities and regions of EU countries.
- A display of similarities across countries in online media consumption (as measured e.g. by the usage of specific websites, the following of specific feeds, or the usage of specific hashtags). This could be acommpanied by an explanation of those (dis)similarities by cultural proximity indicators such as those discussed here, either at a given point of time or across a certain historical period. One would be able to see both the most similar countries to a given one in terms of consmption, and a whole-graph network visualization.
- A starter version of the previous project that associates a measure of insularity to each country. This could be defined by looking at how likely the most popular websites in that country are to be browsed in other countries.
- Plot budget size per person for different levels of government across the world (removing budget amounts that are just transferred to other levels of government). Same for international orgnaizations and the number of people in the area that the organization covers.
- Updating the Cook PVI by county data for the US here with numbers after 2012.
- Organizations:
- An online community dedicated to discussion in English of translated literature (i.e. originally written not in English).
